OAK PARK- Our beloved John R. Perkins passed away November 8th, 2018 in Oak Park, Illinois and is now flying with the angels. John was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on June 5th, 1950. He grew up in Riverside, IL and later moved to Oak Park where he lived with his foster father, Brian Douglas, and his kindred spirit brothers, Jim, Lance and Mike. John was the sweetest, most considerate and fun-loving guy you would ever want to know. He touched so many lives in so many ways and taught us all what it means to be a compassionate human being. John was a hard worker who would willingly take on any job he was asked to do. A natural athlete, he especially loved basketball and was so proud to participate in the Illinois Special Olympics for many years. He also had a mischievous side and enjoyed playful pranks that resulted in great laughter. He taught us that it is the simple things in life that really matter; collecting sea shells, listening to music, good food and a cold beer and hanging out with those you love. He loved everyone without reservation and with no barriers. His smile, charm, kindness and willingness to always help out were an inspiration. We were blessed to have John in our lives and will miss him greatly. The world is a better place because of John and it is a privilege to have known him. John was predeceased by his father, Jim Perkins, in 2013. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Perkins, of Hemphill, TX; his brother Jim and wife Sue of Houston, TX; his brother Jerry and wife Teresa of Houston, TX; his sister Judy and husband Bill of Orono, ME and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He is also survived by his foster father Brian Douglas of Oak Park, IL; and his kindred spirit brothers Jim, Lance and Mike of Oak Park, IL and so many friends in the Chicago area. The family thanks UCP Seguin of Greater Chicago for their support of John and all people with disabilities. Words cannot express our gratitude to Brian Douglas, whose love and compassionate care for John throughout his adulthood provided him with not only a home but a life filled with love and joy. A celebration of John’s life will take place on Thursday, November 15th from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Sourek Funeral Home, 5645 W. 35th St., Cicero, IL. A reception will follow at John’s home 436S.
